The Roman Basilica-Pope John Paul II Square
Along the southwestern longer part of the forum during Roman times, a monumental city basilica was erected which is dated to the 3rd century.Basilicas had a multiple role eg. as public meeting places,trading areas and courts of law.The basilica was 73meters in lenghth and 27 meters in width with three naves of which the central nave ended on the east and west side with an elevated podium (tribunal) from which city dignitaries communicated with the people.The central part of the basilica in most part was destroyed by the construction of the Venetian cistern.
