The Roman Town of Zadar
The town of Zadar is located on a natural peninsula which on its south-eastern end is joined with the mainland (about 750 metres in length, an average width of 330 metres). A mild climate and plenty of water were favourable conditions for settlement.
Archaeological research and findings on the peninsula show that the town has been permanently populated since the 9th century BC when it became one of the strongest centres of the Liburian tribe. It became a Roman colony in the 1st years of the reign of Emperor Augustus, the 1st Roman Emperor, the father of the colony (colonia Iadera).
