Obsidian
Obsidian or volcanic glass is the result of a quick cooling of lava, when due to a sudden drop in temperature the magma crystallizes as glass. Obsidian has several varieties, depending on its chemical properties. It was very appreciated as a raw material because of its structure which is suitable for making very thin and exceptionally sharp tools and weapons.
Obsidian from the Neolithic sites in Dalmatia, originates from the Lipars, islands in the chain of a volcanic archipelago along the northern coast of Sicily, and it represents the most obvious evidence of trade with distant places during the New Stone Age.
